The Gloster canary was developed by Mrs.Rogerson  of  Cheltenham(Gloucestershire, England)in 1925 .It probably was brought  about  by crossing the Norwich with a small border and then selecting the smallest individuals for further breeding. Through constant selection , Mrs.Rogerson produced specimens that were shown at the exhibition at Crystal Palace, London in 1925.

The Gloster canary is a type canary, bred for its physical appearance rather than its color or song. Gloster canaries have roundish , compact bodies and are lively and bold. The Gloster canary has two versions :the crested bird ,known as the Corona, which resembles a" mop" of head feathers; and the plain headed bird ,known as the Consort .The crest in the Corona type should have no interruptions. The Consort  uncrested  head should not be too small and should reveal a light brow line.Corona Glosters should have a nice ,mushroom –shaped crest which covers the eyes and should not be confused with other types of crested canaries ,which have a daisy shaped crest.
Gloster canaries have a pleasant  song that is louder and choppier than that of a song  canary .They tend to be hardy and are lively and bold and need a spacious care or aviary.
The Gloster canary does well in either cages or aviaries. They are on the timid side and should not be housed  together with budgies /parakeets ,lovebirds or other hookbills that tend to be more aggressive. They like to bathe daily and should be given water to do so .Their environment should not be wet ,cool or drafty , and if they are given space to sunbathe , they should  also have a shaded area .Keep perches clean to avoid any foot problems.
As crest × crest   produces a 25 percent lethal factor , both types must be used for breeding.
